Last night, I ate beef stew epicurious at Esplanade mall in Bangkok, Thailand with one of my Thai friends. She's been raving about Santa Fe Steak, a Thai chain restaurant, for a while and wanted me to try it. Promoted as an American-style steak house, it's become popular in Bangkok for steak and western food lovers who like the food but don't want to pay the normal Bangkok high prices. So, intrigued, I agreed to eat there with here and I'm thrilled that I did.

Decide what type of tomatoes you want. I seem to be able to grow the little ones, cherry and grape better, but my taste buds prefer the larger slow cooked braising steak curry types. Up to you, but my nursery usually has plenty of choices.

Step one. Prepare the tomato sauce, which forms the base for most pasta dishes. Cut and fry the onion, and add the diced stewing steak. When the onions and beef are nicely cooked, add some water. Continue boiling the mixture, adding water as it reduces, until you have dissolved most of the onion. Take out the beef and put to one side, to be eaten later.

Finding slow cooker braising steak is great, but did you know that you can cook a whole chicken without a recipe? Sure can. All you do is put the bird in your slow cooker with about a cup or so of water, your favorite seasonings and veggies and let it cook for eight hours. If you need to cook it for ten hours, that's OK too. Your poultry will be perfect as is, or for shredding and using in casseroles, chicken chili or bbq sandwiches.

When you get home fish out the cloves and peppercorns, set aside half of everything for later in the week, make yourself a plate of food, add a little mustard on the side if you like and enjoy! It's so tender you don't have to worry about the traditional cut-thin-slices-against-the-grain rule.

This recipe is very easy to adjust to your liking. If you want to add other ingredients, that is fine. Some people enjoy tomatoes in their beef stew. My family prefers it without, and that is why I did not include tomatoes. Some people do not like peas, but I love the flavor and color they add to the stew. Some people throw in a bit of chopped celery, which is something I do from time to time.

If you really want to kick the flavor up a notch, take a few extra minutes to make some "gravy" with the drippings from the crock pot. When you remove the meat, pour the excess liquid into a bowl through a strainer. Put that liquid into a pot on the stove, braising boneless beef chuck gently boil it until the liquid volume has reduced by roughly half. Add a few tablespoons of flour to thicken it up, and you've got the best taco sauce possible!
